Прилагательное чрезмерный имеет несколько эквивалентов в английском языке: excessive, exorbitant, inordinate, extravagant и immoderate. Excessive имеет наиболее общее значение 'превосходящий меру количества, качества, протяженности' (слишком большой): to attach an excessive importance to something. Exorbitant означает 'превышающий обычное, принятое количество' (о цене, плате, спросе): exorbitant rent exorbitant charge (price). Inordinate имеет в виду превышение норм, предписанных здравым смыслом: inordinate desires, inordinate and unreasonable expectations. Extravagant (в данном синонимическом ряду) означает 'выходящий за границы положенного, неблагоразумный': extravagant praise.
